Catherine's project New World Other has been featured in The New Yorker, highlighting her work in Dali, a historic town in China’s Yunnan province undergoing rapid social and economic change.

Set between the mountains and Erhai Lake, Dali has long been home to the Bai people and sustained by agriculture. Hyland’s project documents a new wave of young Chinese migrants, many working remotely, who are relocating to the area in search of an alternative to the pressures of urban life.

New World Other focuses on the evolving local economy, and in particular the central role photography now plays within it. From pre-wedding shoots in nearby tourist destinations to staged portrait experiences, image-making has become a key source of income, reflecting shifting relationships between land, labour and identity.

While Dali has historically balanced farming with tourism, Catherine's work observes growing tensions as rising living costs and demographic shifts begin to reshape the community.
